Therapeutic play normally takes place in a safe, comfortable playroom, where very few rules or limits are imposed on the child, encouraging free expression and allowing the therapist to observe the child’s choices, decisions, and play style. The goal is to help children learn to express themselves in healthier ways, become more respectful and empathetic, and discover new and more positive ways to solve problems.

I believe one of the bravest things you can ever do is the work of understanding your own story. Because of that, I’m passionate about helping people find freedom and growth by rewriting the parts of their stories that have left them with a negative self image.

I am gentle and non-judgmental, but straightforward. I believe that therapy is a collaborative process, where our relationship is a safe space to explore pain, shame, and trauma. I also believe that our struggles are opportunities for learning and growth. Understanding our stories deepens and reshapes our lives, and I can’t wait to hear yours. I transitioned to private practice after leaving a residential substance use treatment facility where I facilitated and managed the LGBTQIA+ programming.

I believe that we are the creators of our realities and that therapy can be a catalyst to assist clients in discovering their own intrinsic ability to understand and change their realities. As a therapist based in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Existentialism, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction Therapy, I believe that my role as a therapist is to empower clients to help them help themselves and discover their true meaning and purpose in life. I take a holistic, empathetic, and nonjudgmental approach to connecting with clients. The therapist-client relationship is collaborative in nature, wherein I take a team-player approach in assisting my clients in becoming their best selves. My goal is to help clients process the events that have shaped their perceptions on life, learn from their experiences, find peace with their pasts, grow, recover, and heal.

Our work together is very important to me. At times, it may focus on helping you struggle less with the thoughts, emotions, sensations, and memories you do not want so as to help you better move toward what is important to you in life. Sometimes our own personal histories can make things more difficult for us. In this work together, we will always be focusing on your hopes, goals, or possible outcomes important to you in life. Through our work, I hope that you will gradually learn a new way to relate with the things you have long struggled against.

Children naturally communicate through their play. Play therapists believe toys are children’s words and play is their language. Play therapy allows children to express their emotions and experiences in a safe and accepting environment. Katie uses a non- directive child-centered approach to therapy allowing children to lead the play in the direction they need to go. With seven years of experience in a large public school setting, Katie has worked with children, teens, and adolescents experiencing a number of struggles including adjustment, anxiety, behavior, depression, and trauma. Although play looks a little different as children get older, expressive play techniques can help teens and adolescents confront their struggles in a non-threatening space. As a Registered Play Therapist, Katie is passionate about the power of play therapy in helping children find their “voice” and move in the direction of hope and healing.
